Sustainability

The roots of sustainability can be traced back to 18th century forestry, where the focus at the time was on responsible management of timber resources. Over time, sustainability has evolved into a holistic approach that integrates economic, social, environmental and ethical aspects into farming practices. The Brundtland Report of 1978 defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

This definition emphasizes the essential balance between economic, environmental and social performance, similar to a wedding cake model that depicts the interrelationships of environmental, social and economic aspects.
